Artist Statement - A Sense of Place
I’ve been cycling between landscape and my seemingly abstract diptychs for many years. Although the two directions feel more related as time goes by, this is the first time I’ve shown them together.
Moving to the Hudson Valley from New York City three years ago brought a fundamental change to my landscape process. While I used to paint in the city from plein air drawings made on site, I now have the luxury of unlimited access. Suddenly the possibilities are endless. The 2019 oils on panel begin to break from the plein air references, exploring mark-making directly at the source. With the isolation brought on by the pandemic, works on paper like Willows in Winter take on a dreamy quality as multiple layers of oil pastel are applied and scraped away over time.
While the fruit diptychs use the same oil pastels and Arches paper as my landscape studies, they appear to be abstract blocks of color. Drawn from life, they depend on an aha moment when the viewer realizes they are up-close depictions of the skin of a fruit or vegetable on the left and it’s flesh on the right. Built of many layers and burnished by hand, they are also about surface sheen and incident, such as fingermarks and wipes. Drawn from my decades of experience as a painting conservator, this work feels deeply personal.

Bio
Daisy Craddock (b.1949, Memphis,TN) received a BA in Fine Arts from Rhodes College and an MFA in Painting from the University of Georgia. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States. Recent one person shows include Daisy Craddock Harvest at Front Room Gallery, NYC, with Garvey Simon Gallery, October 29-November 22, 2020, and Daisy Craddock: A View of One’s Own, August 2017 at John Davis Gallery in Hudson NY. An installation of Daisy’s work from the 1980’s was on view in the lobby of the Georgia Museum of Art from July 23 – October, 2018. Recent group shows include Eight by Ten, Pamela Salisbury Gallery, Hudson, NY, December 2020, Art on Paper 2019 at Weatherspoon Art Museum.
