Fabienne Lasserre

Fabienne Lasserre, a 2019 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, received her MFA from Columbia University. Her recent show, Eye Contact at TURN Gallery in New York, was reviewed by Anthony Hawley in artpapers.  Other recent exhibits were held at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY; Parisian Laundry Gallery, Montreal; and Palazzo Costa Tretenerro, Piacenza, Italy.  Two-person exhibits include Safe Gallery, New York with Annette Wehrhahn and 315 Gallery, New York with Ezra Tessler.   Lasserre has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Ceysson de Bénétière, Luxembourg; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, TX;  Museo de Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia, and Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.  In 2017, she was awarded the Saint-Gaudens Memorial Fellowship to produce two outdoor sculptures for the grounds of the park. In 2016-17, she received a Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program award. She is Director of  the Low-residency Graduate program MFA in Studio Arts (MFAST) at MICA in Baltimore. Lasserre lives and works in Brooklyn.

Artist Statement

Work in the studio is an attempt to impose my wishes and politics on materials: to make them do what I think and want. This stubborn hope is offset by a forced and learned flexibility toward their rebuke of my intentions. The messy and mutual tuning of the subjective and the practical leads me to embrace the uncontrolled, both in process and outcome. This opens onto a related “blur” in formal disciplines. Working between, around, and across sculpture and painting, I mine the “excluded middle”, what is left out when we divide into categories.
